CEZ's Detmarovice power plant to stop using coal in 2 yrs

Detmarovice, North Moravia, April 6 (CTK) - Elektrarna Detmarovice, the largest conventional coal-fired power station in Moravia and Silesia, will stop using coal within two years and replace it with cogeneration, said Vladislav Sobol, spokesman for the plant's operator, energy group CEZ.

Detmarovice's three coal-fired units have a total capacity of 600 megawatts and will be taken offline in late 2022 or once the 2022/2023 heating season ends at the latest, the spokesman said.

The project is in line with the Industry and Trade Ministry's heating sector transformation strategy and expects to apply for the upcoming operational and investment grants, the spokesman said, without disclosing the expected costs.

CEZ expects to build four cogeneration units with a total capacity of about 45 megawatts at the Detmarovice power station.

The power station has been active since 1975 and, with an output of 800 megawatts, used to be the largest black coal-fired source in the Czech Republic. It supplies heat mainly to households and firms in the towns of Bohumin and Orlova.
